If you study the Professional Skills Course (PSC) at The University of Law (one of the leading PSC providers), you will have several course options to choose from. These include individual modules and cost-effective packages. Here we explain the cost of the electives on the PSC.
What are the elective modules?
The PSC is made up of three core modules and four elective modules. At The University of Law, the electives involve six hours of training each and are delivered over one full day (or in some cases two days).
Unlike for the core modules, there are no prescribed written standards or formal assessments for the electives. The Solicitor Regulation Authority (SRA) recommends that delegates study the elective modules after the compulsory core.
The University of Law offers a wide range of over 40 electives, which are grouped into Practice Skills, Contentious Skills, and Non-Contentious Skills. You can choose whatever modules you want, as long as they add up to 24 hours of tuition.
If you want to pursue a career in litigation, you can opt to complete the Higher Rights of Audience (HRA) course instead of the PSC electives. The HRA allows you to represent clients in the senior courts in England and Wales as a solicitor-advocate.
Together with the 48 hours of compulsory modules, the electives make up the PSC. You cannot be admitted as a solicitor by the SRA until you have completed the PSC. The SRA recommends that trainees complete the PSC during their period of recognised training or training contract.
How much do the electives cost?
At The University of Law, the elective modules can be booked individually or as a package. If you book the electives individually, the cost of the per module is £235 + VAT.
Alternatively, you can book a cost-effective package that suits your needs. The University of Law offers the following packages:
- “24 Hours of Electives": £595 + VAT. This package includes four elective modules and is £365 cheaper (before VAT) than booking the electives individually.
- “Pick and Mix”: £1,435 + VAT. This package includes the three core modules plus four electives.
- “PSC and Higher Rights training”: £1,895 + VAT. This package includes the PSC core modules and the Higher Rights of Audience (HRA) course, but it does not include the cost of the assessments.
- “PSC, Higher Rights training and assessment”: £2,295 + VAT. This package includes the PSC core modules, the HRA course, and the cost of the assessments.
If you book a package, you do not have to select the dates for all your modules at the time of booking. This allows you flexibility when picking your dates.
Alumni discount
The University of Law Alumni benefit from a 10% discount on the PSC fees.
Who pays for the PSC?
According to the SRA, your employer must pay the fees, and any reasonable travel expenses incurred, for your first attempt at the PSC.
Employers are not obliged to offer trainees paid study leave to prepare for the PSC, however, they can do so at their discretion.
